Meet Carla
We are thrilled to have Carla Hegwood of Los Angeles, California join the team at MAHI International on the island of Pohnpei. She received her B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech and is currently completing a fieldwork assignment for her MPH in Community Health Sciences from the University of California, Los Angeles. Since June, Carla has been volunteering primarily with the World Health Organization (WHO). Her focal point is national strategic planning meetings on road safety in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Palau, and the Marshall Islands. She is also conducting population salt intake surveys for Pohnpei and is updating WHO recommendations for national strategy on salt reduction. Aside from her work with WHO, Carla assisted the specialty ophthalmology team from the University of Utah during their 2-week outreach mission to the FSM.
Carla's academic interests include maternal and child health, and strengthening health systems. She also enjoys horseback riding, dancing, herb/veggie gardening, and good food.
