Hooked On Phonics in the Southern Islands of Pohnpei

Volunteer Jeff Georges during a workshop in one of the outer islands of Pohnpei.

This summer, MAHI International donated over 50 packets of Hooked on Phonics reading programs to the southern islands of Pohnpei -- Sapwuafik, Nukuoru, and Kapingamarangi -- to improve English speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension in elementary students. Our mission on this trip was to create an opportunity for educational and personal growth, and provide outer-island students with tools to achieve their dreams, via the Hooked on Phonics program.

Our volunteers Peter Gille and Jeffrey Georges traveled by ship to the most remote islands of Pohnpei and held 45-minute presentations and workshops at each elementary school. They met with the principals and teaching staff, briefly presenting the Hooked on Phonics program. The teachers were given step-by-step instructions on how to present and apply the tool for English learning, and they practiced teaching the program with each other.

On behalf of the people of these outer islands, we would like to express appreciation to Mr. Baker for donating the Hooked on Phonics reading programs.
