Ophthalmology and Diabetes Education Team

Dr. Wresch and Betty Jo Vercio came to serve the island community of Pohnpei with ophthalmology services and diabetes education. (PICTURED: Dr. Wresch at work)

Dr. Robert Wresch is an ophthalmologist from the Guam SDA eye clinic. His first visit to Pohnpei was 22 years ago, so our team at MAHI International is pleased to have him return to help assess and treat the current ophthalmology needs in Pohnpei. During his 3-day clinic, he saw approximately 120 patients. Dr. Wresch screened these patients to find surgery candidates for an ophthalmology team to come in July 2013. Many patients were diagnosed with cataracts, pterygiums, and retinopathy. Dr. Wresch also assisted with the diabetes lectures at public elementary schools and the College of Micronesia Schools of Public Health and Nursing. [SEE PICTURES]

Betty Jo Vercio is a diabetes educator from Washington State. This is her third visit to Pohnpei and we are so blessed to have her return to serve the people of Micronesia. She worked with the middle school-aged kids at our adopted schools, teaching them about diabetes, health and nutrition. She also held a diabetes workshop at the College of Micronesia Schools of Public Health and Nursing. This workshop focused on diabetes identification, treatment, management, and reversal. Betty Jo also held classes in the out-patient clinic at the Pohpei State Hospital for those who were waiting to be seen at the eye clinic. [SEE PICTURES]
