Speech Pathology in Micronesia
We were alarmed to learn that there are over 600 cases of children with special needs in the Pohnpei public schools. This caseload is greater than the number of resource specialists hired in the entire island. This number includes the deaf and autistic students who have communication challenges. The Department of Education requested for MAHI International to find a professional to help meet the needs of these students.

Physical Education Curriculum for Pohnpei State
MAHI International volunteer Chapman Cochran of Oceanside, California is serving in Pohnpei during the 2014-2015 school year. Cochran developed a physical education curriculum for grades 1-8 for the Pohnpei State Department of Education. Before this new curriculum, the State had no existing P.E. program. This curriculum was designed specifically for the Pohnpei public schools where there are limited to no resources of sports equipment. Currently, Cochran is conducting a pilot

Diabetes Clinics in Pohnpei's Rural Dispensaries
From October 31 to November 11, Dr. Joel Massey and Tina Heinrich, PA, along with other MAHI International volunteers were in Micronesia to conduct diabetes clinics throughout the rural areas of Pohnpei at the public health dispensaries. The purpose of the medical mission was to screen new patients for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. We are thrilled to have Carla Hegwood of Los Angeles, California join the team at MAHI International on the island of Pohnpei. She received her B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech and is currently completing a fieldwork assignment for her MPH in Community Health Sciences from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Ophthalmology Mission Team 2014
Here is a picture of the ophthalmic mission team embarking on their voyage from mainland Pohnpei to the outer island of Satawan in the Mortlocks, Chuuk. These faces consist of teams representing the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center, the Guam SDA Eye Clinic, and MAHI International. Ophthalmology Assessment and Diabetes Education Team to Outer Island
