>> PROFESSIONAL GROWTH FOR EDUCATORS
A principal focus of MAHI International is educating the islanders. While in the past MAHI International has concentrated on health education and providing additional resources to schools such as books, we are excited to step inside the classroom to improve the level of education throughout the Pohnpeian schools. Leading this effort are Mr. Miller Benjamin, MAHI’s Senior Educator and Education Specialist Drew Robinson. MAHI International is working to train teachers how to address student deficiencies by adjusting their curriculum and teaching them new strategies. In addition, MAHI International plans to provide supplemental resources for the teachers and work with school administrators to effectively lead their schools. Furthermore, MAHI International will be collaborating with education and government officials on policy changes and resource management.
We have conducted student reading level assessments for Grades 6, 7 and 8. After assessing 560 students we noticed drastic room for improvement:
90% of students are reading below grade level
30% of students are reading 4 grades or more below grade level
37 students are reading at Kindergarten level or below
Currently we are working on obtaining 50 iPads installed with English learning software to improve these student reading levels. MAHI International believes this new technology will engage the students, be a fantastic educational tool, and make a tremendous difference in increasing their reading proficiency.

>> EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE (EMS) PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Early in 2010, MAHI International was requested by the Pohnpei State Administration to assist in developing the first Emergency Medical Service (EMS) program on the island of Pohnpei. Currently, we have been donated a fully BLS-equipped ambulance from Hall Ambulance of Kern County, CA. Hall Ambulance has also donated equipment to outfit an existing ambulance on the island.
In addition, MAHI International has assisted in planning the EMS technician training program that will be offered through the College of Micronesia on the Pohnpei campus for the Fall 2010 semester. Upon completion of this Fall 2010 training program, Pohnpei State will have their first 20 EMTs to serve their community!
>> AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) TRAINING
In conjunction with San Joaquin Community Hospital (Bakersfield, CA), MAHI International has been asked by the Pohnpei State Government and the FSM Government to provide on-going BLS training to the people in their island communities. MAHI volunteers are certifying individuals in healthcare facilities, port authority security, the fire departments, and the airport staff in order to keep up with FAA regulations.
We’d like to thank San Joaquin Community Hospital, Krystal, Donna and the rest of the Education Department in their aspirations for MAHI International to train the people of Micronesia!
>> HEALTH SCREENING
Because of the lack of basic health education, many Micronesians fail to understand the importance of regularly monitoring their own health. Many don’t see the significance of preventative healthcare, they are afraid to see a doctor, or they can’t afford the cost of a check-up.
Our MAHI team and volunteers will be conducting regular and free health screenings for the people in Pohnpei and its outer islands. At the same time, we will be collecting data about each person’s health to better understand the needs to find the best solutions, and to provide effective health programs for the community.
Currently, MAHI International has completed and data-recorded 2,200 health screenings in Micronesia! (updated October 2010)
For just $5 per examination, you can help us conduct health screenings for the community members.
Our first health screening trip was in January 2008.

FUTURE PROJECTS
>> MAHI INTERNATIONAL WELLNESS CENTER
Lifestyle diseases are silently killing the Micronesians. Because of the great need for lifestyle education, MAHI International is in the fundraising stage with hopes to establish the first MAHI Wellness Center on the island of Pohnpei. This Wellness Center will be used to encourage the people of Pohnpei by providing a place for healthy lifestyle development. The MAHI Wellness Center will focus on educating the local people about nutrition, exercise, and healthful living habits. The Wellness Center will have three main functions: First, it will serve as a lifestyle education center for those who need personalized lifestyle training. Second, it will serve the community as a full fitness gym providing the members with individual fitness programs. The third function will be a rehabilitation program that will focus on individuals that need physical therapy. It is the purpose of the MAHI Wellness Center to make a positive impact on the Micronesian lifestyle.
